Mike Hughes believes the Earth is flat. To prove it, he built himself a rocket and launched himself 1,875' into the sky.
“Mad” Mike Hughes, the world’s only flat-Earther rocket man, finally blasted off on his well-publicized mission yesterday before crashing back down to reality, shaken but relatively unharmed.

Giving him due credit, the launch was remarkably smooth, especially considering that the rocket was made by Hughes himself for a very small price.

On Saturday afternoon at around 3pm local time, Mad Mike flew 570 meters (1,875 feet) up into the skies above the Mojave Desert of California in his green rocket, branded with a giant “RESEARCH FLAT EARTH” sticker and a US flag on the side. His parachutes successfully sprung out as he reached its peak altitude and the rocket drifted back down to our globe.

I thought I had previously posted about this, but can't seem to find a thread.

The Flat Earth Society has enabled Mad Mike Hughes to indulge in his fantasy. Me thinks Ol' Mike is crazy...like a fox. Without funding there is no way in hell Mike could build his steam powered special on a limo driver's salary, and Mad Mike managed to pull off a sweet financial plan by exploiting the gullible. Well done Mike!

As for the question of Flat vs. Round, how do the Flat Earthers dismiss the fact that every observable planetary object in our solar system is spherical, including the Sun?

Devil's Advocate: because they aren't spherical, they are discs. Anymore questions?

Okay this is too stupid to even comment on...

They are aware they could put a keyfob cam in an Alpha III and accomplish the same thing, right?? (facepalm).

Later! OL J R :)

Or take a ride in a hot air balloon. I think Tmack had it right, the guy wanted to do something expensive and gained some notoriety and a backer in a unique way.

Mike Hughes was reported to have died in another attempt to reach the Karmen line in his home built rocket.

Yep, that's very sad. Randy has tried to follow what he was doing since he made his first flight.

While on the one hand, we can good naturedly (I hope it is in good nature) have a laugh at this man's example as has taken place on other channels, I know that many who have practiced our hobby have dreamed of doing what he attempted (and achieved to a small extent).

Whatever his goals or motivations may have been, I believe we should left a hearty salud to him who dared. :~salud:
