We just had another shooting...this one in my home state on the west side of Michigan. A Sheriff Deputy, two Bailiffs, and the perpetrator killed in a COURTROOM shootout.
Getting really crazy.

Yep, we're currently in northern Indiana, and of course the TV news covers "all of Michiana" so it's figuring prominently in the news. Very sad.
I've seen that sort of thing before. One day when I was in the academy, doing "field training" with some detectives who just happened to be in the courthouse conferring with a deputy DA that morning, we got a call and all took off sprinting upstairs because someone got hostile or excessively emotional in the courtroom. In such a "civilized" setting as a courthouse, I guess it's easy to let one's guard down. As it was, everything was under control by the time we got up there, but still... situations can go south VERY quick.

Aren't courthouses gun free (except of course for LEO's) in Michigan?

He turned on the bailiff and took his gun after a brief scuffle. He then used that pistol to shoot the bailiff and the others. I know from the times I've served on a jury, both in Texas and here in Illinoisy, the bailiffs are usually old, retired cops who took the job after they could no longer be a beat cop.bernomatic wrote:Aren't courthouses gun free (except of course for LEO's) in Michigan?

Bet you won't hear a lot more about this. The President can't turn it into an excuse for more gun control, so the media won't trumpet it across the nation. What's he gonna say? We need to take guns out of the hands of bailiffs?

The solution for courtroom violence is quite simple: eliminate courtrooms.
