I have been noticing a trend in Hollywood in the recent times, for them to take certain characters and change what we have been accustomed to from the past. Besides certain comic book characters race or sexual preferences, there is now a rumor that they want to make James Bond female Its one thing to create characters in a comic book mileau to "help increase social awareness", quite another to actually transform the main character into something else.

"But Berno," I can hear someone saying, "Are you trying to imply that a female can't be a MI5 secret agent?" No not at all. I'm just trying to state that if the agent is female, she can't be James Bond. She can be a female version of James Bond, but the cultural identity of that character is as male, he was written to have traits to identify him as male and only as male.

So is it Cultural Appropriation?

I hate it when some pus brained idiot that has no originality, decides to redo someone else's success by simply changing the gender, sex, etc.! I will not read, watch or otherwise engage, with the attempt to steal another person's original works.

It takes more than a simple change of name or race. Calling him "The Ebony Arachnid" isn't enough.

This phenomena actually started really coming to my attention when Netflix came out with their version (I use that term lightly) of the 1960 classic Lost In Space in which they switched the gender of Doctor Smith. I really can't say much more about that remake as I have never (and probably never will) watched one episode of that show. Jonathon Harris just put so much into that character that even though I truly believe a female could be as duplicitous and evil, the other traits he brought to Dr. Smith just wouldn't stand up to scrutiny when played by a woman.
Dr. Smith is an evil, conniving, lazy, scoundrel and way anyone would try to lay that ignominy on the female gender just to try and steal a bit of male history is beyond me.

I love the original show and cast but 99.9% of the time remakes of anything are a turn off for me. I watched the new LIS trailer and that was enough for me to, PASS!

Not just Smith but the entire thing. I barely could stomach the late 90's movie. The only parts I liked in it included original Will (Bill Mumy) and new Penny. (Lacy Chabert) We love Lacy.

You didn't ask, not exactly related to the topic, but I HAAAAATE ST Discovery. JUST STOP! Trek is so far from Roddenberry, it literally makes me ill. I can't even watch the intros.

I found the 1998 movie version at least entertaining without destroying the original series feel. Netflix's version is a strain on both previous versions "history".

And don't even get me started about STD (a more fitting initialism I could not imagine). Roddenberry's Trek didn't throw socialism in your face. It may have been there, but it wasn't the story line.
